Best scenes

There are certain scenes in certain shows that I particularly enjoy watching, and sometimes rewatch even if I don't feel like rewatching the entire show they're part of. Care for a list?

1. Neo learns jiu-jitsu. (The Matrix)
2. Neo's fight in the lobby of the villa. (It's really the only thing in the second Matrix movie that's any good.)
3. Mirai no Trunks kills Frieza (DBZ)
4. Piccolo merges with Nail (DBZ)
5. Ep 9 of Kamichu (INS Yamato)
6. Junerin first appears (Kirameki Project)
7. Yucie and Glenda get the crystal flower from the Demon world (Petite Princess Yucie)
8. Saving the Fairy World (Petite Princess Yucie)
9. Testing out the rebuilt engine (Stratos 4)
10. The very first episode of Ranma 1/2
11. The Curse of 1000 (Those who hunt Elves)
12. Everything involving Akidra (UFO Princess Valkyrie 2, eps 9-12)
13. Seina is given the second Kamidake and transports Neige (Tenchi Muyo: GXP)

And to that I now must add:

14. Miyafuji's first flight (Strike Witches)

Even if the series turns out to be garbage, the second half of the second episode will be high on my rewatch list. I've rewatched it at least 10 times already and I still love it.

There's no correlation between series quality and presence on this list. Those who hunt elves is not what anyone would consider high quality story telling, yet there's something compelling about that one episode.

Nonetheless, I have high hopes for Sky Witches. I am beginning to get "sports story" vibes here, and if they tell the classic sports story straight, it's going to be great.

1 So, you do not think that raising to the stage through the fog was a little bit overdone?

I have to say, the rotating eyeglasses of Miss Cloisterman were laugh-worthy.

Well, that part of the ship had taken a shot just before that moment, so there's at least a bit of excuse for the smoke. That whole scene, including the near-death visit from Miyafuji's father, edges close to bathos. But it still works for me.

I didn't claim that these scenes were necessarily high art. They're just scenes that I don't get tired of watching over and over.

I'm not even going to attempt to make a actual list, but off the top of my head the rocket launch sequence from Honneamise: Royal Space Force never fails to make me break out in a sweat.

I even gritted my teeth and bought the grossly overpriced Blu-Ray of that movie. (After buying the VHS, the regular LD, the deluxe CAV LD, the regular DVD, the deluxe DVD, and the HD-DVD.  Good thing the Gainax guys are my pals.  (And I have to admit they gave me a signed copy of the boxed CAV LD set, albeit after I'd alrerady bought one.)

4 By the way, Pete, when I rewatch that scene, I pick it up with the eyecatch, which is just as she reaches deck-level, before she launches.

5 I rewatched it just now and it's just... not working. Animation is irritating (the only good moment is when Sakamoto asks "Can you do it?"), and the whole thing seems overly staged. Oh well.

But then, I saw ep.22 of Naruto 20 times or about that. Surely it's something no right-minded person would want.

BTW, nice eyecatch (the takeoff happens right in front of it).

7 Um, ITYM Strike Witches.

I've got say,  although I wasn't able to get more than about halfway through it, I preferred Sky Girls.

9 I tend to rewatch Stellvia's Great Mission arc (episodes 8 and 9) repeatedly. I've also been rewatching the end of Gurren-Lagann.

10 The last DVD of Shingu is another I revisit quite a lot, beginning with the second meeting of Myouken and Muryou.

11 I dunno, I think Shingu is uniformly good. I only rewatch it all.

Stellvia though, indeed the Great Mission and Genesis Mission are very rewatcheable. "Katase... san?" for Great Mission and "doushte Katase-san sono bokunenjin ni..." for the epilogue.

But actually this may be a sign of a poorer quality series, with big ups and downs. Naruto is surely one, and Stellvia has tons of bad places.

BTW, In DBZ, right after that episde in the original list, Vegeta says in dub: "Enough of the suspense already! Get on with the blasted story!" I have it on VHS and I so want to rewatch it subtitled.

I don't recall any line like that, but then they've redubbed it about four times so it's not too surprising.

One of my favorite lines in the dub that they left out was in the Buu saga. At one point Piccolo, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks are flying around and locate Mr. Satan. At that time, in the dub, he was referred to as "Hercule", and after they picked him up (I think Goten was carrying him) Gohan looks over and says, "How's it hanging, Herc?"

When they redubbed it for DVD release, they went back to calling him "Mr. Satan", so that line didn't work anymore.

13 End of the first episode of Divergence Eve: "Did I . . . die?"  Hooked me, utterly.

End of the each of the first two episodes of Code Geass. Back-to-back cliffhangers are never a bad way to start, but the first one especially signaled that this was not going to be the usual run-of-the-mill anime.

Shingu: "I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!"

Melancholy: Day of Sagittarius.  Yuki hacks the computer club's game, and waits on Kyon's permission to execute.

MSNadesico:  Yurika's choice -- raise the shields and kill the last colonists, or die, and the colonists die anyway.

Generally, I don't go back and watch them months later, but in the weeks after first viewing, definitely
.

14 I generally don't watch just specific episodes or scenes as I like seeing the whole show.  One scene that I always really enjoy watching when I rewatch the movie is the rocket launch sequence near the end of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.  I try to watch it every other year for Halloween watching.

Some Ghibli movies have nice scenes that I love watching as well.  The whole looking for her younger sister and the reunion sequence in Totoro is really nice for me.  Kiki has a lot of great scenes for me such as the propeller powered bike sequence.
