AsoIku is a friend of mine, and...

Pete's got a couple of photos of a manga magazine he found somewhere. He says the second one is from Asobi ni Iku Yo.

I request that he check again. I don't recognize either of those characters, and the description of the situation (some guy wrapping himself in a futon and hiding in a closet) doesn't sound like Kakazu Kio to me.

Kio isn't the most praiseworthy male harem lead in the anime universe, but he's not hikkikomori either. And he does have guts. He assaulted a building on an American military base, alone, armed with a pistol. He jumped in front of Eris to protect her from an assassin in a powered suit. And he designed, built, and flew a space ship out to Jupiter in an emergency. Kio isn't everything I'd like from a harem lead, but he sure isn't a wimp.

My honest opinion is that Pete got confused about which manga he was looking at.

1 I just checked, it's the right manga. I found a page where everyone is together: Aoi, her "rival" redhead, an assisdroid, the dude, and Maya. I'll post a picture when I have a break from work.

2 I don't remember a rival redhead, either. I guess whoever is doing the manga is taking some serious liberties with the story and the characters.

3 Well, it's the other girl. You said they shoot at each other in every episode. I forgot her name.

4 Oh, Manami! I don't think of her as a redhead; her hair is boring brown.

5 I immediately recognized both characters, but perhaps that's because there's a color insert in book 9 by the mangaka, 888.

6 Wait a minute, I just remembered: Maya is one of Antonia's combat maids. And yeah, she does have a scar like that.

8 I can't make out a lot of the dialog in Pete's second sample, but it looks like Kio's having a "pick a girl" crisis. Aoi accuses Manami of meddling, and Maya asks Kio "do you really need to choose one?".

The odd thing is that the manga is up to volume 8 already, so either Pete's phone book is old, or the manga is being padded out with extra harem angst. It's hard to see that particular situation arising after the events at the end of the anime.

Although for Kio, assaulting a military base is probably a lot easier than kissing a girl...

9 He said that the volume he was looking at was June 2010, nearly a year ago.

10 Volume 7 came out that month. The cover art for all of them is pretty generic, so I can't get any feel for how far along it is in the story.

Also. When he asks "誰かを好きになったことはありますか" and Maya says "ええ ございます", she looks dignified and yet smug. It's quite skillfuly drawn. In a standalone volume, I might've given it the chance. But the contrast with the lolipedo iyashikei manga in the same magazine puts it to shame.
