I'm going to proceed forward with new episodes of Aria the Animation tonight, but before doing that I'm going back and rewatching some of the best eps I've already seen. I rewatched ep 1 again, and now I'm rewatching the first half of ep 5. A couple of mild spoilers below the fold.
Akari calls the fox ou kitsune. I had to listen to that several times to pick it up. I have the feeling it's ç¿ ou meaning "venerable" rather than 王 ou meaning "king" but I could be wrong about that. But while looking up "fox" in the dictionary to try to figure out candidate Japanese words, I noticed something interesting.
Akari buys inari at a food stand and is carrying it with her when she meets the fox. And it turns out that ç¨²è· inari means "fox god of harvests".
Even more curious is the woman who sold Akari the inari.

Don't those two bumps on her forehead look just like the ones on Aria's forehead? It makes me wonder if she's really what she appears to be.
