Aria the Natural -- delivered

And on time, too. Which was a bit of a surprise, really. This morning I got up and looked out the window, and this is what I saw:

And I said, "Oh, hell; I wonder if it's gonna shut down the city?" Didn't turn out to be a problem; maybe 1 inch accumulation and it's melting off right now, because the temperature is well above freezing. Fedex delivered just after noon, which is pretty typical.

Nozomi is definitely trying to pass the weight test. There's 5 DVDs in the box for the first 13 eps of the series. The fifth one is labeled "Extras".

The box art has a picture of Akira, Athena, Woody, Alice, the mailman, and Ai-chan, and Ai is a lot taller. In Aria the Animation she's bitty, barely coming up to Akari's waist. In this picture she's only a head shorter than Alice. To grow that much must have required at least three years. But maybe that's from the series and maybe it isn't. I'll see in a while.

And now to watch.

UPDATE: A few frame grabs from the beginning of the first episode:

I do believe that Akari looks older, but it's probably just that she's gotten her hair trimmed. Chronologically it seems to be just a few months after the end of the first series.

It's Carnival, probably the most busy time of the year in Neo-Venezia, and all the undines are working hard. Rather than just taking one or two people at a time, the three water fairies are loading the boats up just to accomodate the demand. Aika is helping Akira, and Alice is working with Athena. (You know, it always makes me happy when I see Alice smiling like that. She was so glum and dejected at the beginning of the first series, and it's nice to see that she's loosening up.)

Alicia is alone, because Akari is manning the office to entertain guests who are waiting for Alicia. And Ai-chan is visiting. She's staying with Akari for a few days, and she somehow has managed to get an undine costume that fits her, in Aria Company colors. She's working with Akari to entertain the guests. Damn, she's cute!

By the way, the next-series teaser on the last DVD of Aria the Animation was the OP for the first episode of the second season.

The whole "year" thing gets to me a bit.  The three series take place over three Martian years; allowing for the new orbit after terraforming, wouldn't the girls be six years older by the end of Ep. 52? (counting them all together).

But then again, that means that Alice spent over eight years in middle school... makes no sense.

Hmmm... I think I'll have to kill some more catgirls over this.

I've noted before that the series is taking some serious astronomical liberties, pretty much in assuming that the Martian day is exactly the same as a Terran day, and that the Martian year is exactly twice as long as the Terran year.

Also in stipulating the existance of a moon for Mars large enough to cause significant tides.

None of those is true, unless the terraforming project was really aggressive. If they changed the orbit of Mars to make its year longer, and changed its rate of spin to make its day slightly shorter, and then moved enough extra mass in place to create that moon -- well, then, their technology has reached the godlike, and I look forward to their next effort, the terraforming of Venus.

Besides which, who gives a damn? This isn't a science fiction story about terraforming; it's a feel-good story about girls working as gondoliers.

Yes, yes:  I agree completely... and I love this series almost as much as the Duck does (horrible thought: imaging Duck and I watching Series 3 together and crying like little girls... shudder)

Anyway:  my very tanjential point was that like you I was an engineer and that's something you just can't turn off, even in a near-perfect show such as this.

Aside:  I once told my wife, when I die, if I come to on Aqua, I know I'm Heaven; if I'm in Glie, Purgatory, and if I wake up and see Lain, Hell.

5 "Glie" is the setting for Haibane Renmei.
