Absolute Duo -- ep 3

I think this series may have potential. This episode wasn't harem hijinks (mostly); instead, it was combat. Usa-sensei (Professor Bun-bun) tells them that today's lesson is called New Blade Battle.

All the duos spread out all over the campus, and between 5PM and 7PM they fight any other duo they encounter. The goal is to be the last duo standing.

More, including spoilers, below the fold.

Julie's strategy for the fight is: "We'll proceed straight ahead and defeat whoever we bump into." Which has the merit of being straightforward, at least.

Generally what happens is that when they get attacked, Thor stops it with his buckler and then Julie polishes off the enemies. Though sometimes Thor gets one, too.

They end up fighting Tachibana and Hotaka. Thor takes on Hotaka, whose weapon is really too large and heavy for her. He wears her out, which only takes a few seconds. Meanwhile, Tachibana's weapon is a Kusarigama and Julie takes her on and beats her.

Thor and Julie had hoped to fight Tora and Tatu, but they find them on the floor, nearly out cold.

It turns out that Tsukimi (Professor Bun-bun) is hunting the students, and it also turns out that if you want it to, your blaze can do physical damage. Which she does. She seems to want to outright kill Thor and Julie, and so the resulting fight ends up being pretty spectacular. It took a good 5 minutes of screen time.

Another thing she reveals is that if a blaze weapon gets destroyed, it causes spiritual damage to its owner, which she shows by slicing up Tora's sword, leading to him screaming while lying on the ground.

Thor tries using his energy attack (Julie has decided it's called "Mjolnir") against her but it's too slow and she dodges it.

Eventually they come up with a combination attack where Julie locks Tsukimi's sword and then Thor hits and destroys the sword rather than going after the teacher. It shatters, she screams and passes out, and the battle is over.

Who she actually was, and why she was trying to kill the students, isn't revealed. Maybe someday we'll find out. But there's something really dark going on. Thor keeps having nightmares about a fight in a dojo where lots of people he knew were killed or hurt. He is training to gain revenge, and it turns out Julie is, too.

She shows him a major scar on her back.
