A programmer's desk

Pete shows us a picture of the desk of an anime producer, and then a picture he claims is of the desk of a computer programmer.

Ha! I say. Ha! It's obviously phony. It's too clean, for one thing. And there isn't any stack of empty soda cans!

On the other hand, I like the producer's desk (even though I find figmas to be really creepy).

UPDATE: An old programming maxim: "A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind."

1 The best desk I ever saw was an engineer's desk. Can't remember his name; he was an old white-haired guy, big in op-amps, if I recall. Used to write a regular column for one of the electronics trades.

Bob, perhaps? Worked for National?

Anyway, his cubicle was completely filled by drifts of paper as high as his desktop, which had no free space whatsoever on top. I think he posted the picture as part of his explanation for why he didn't want to be moved to a new office.

2 I had a coworker at Tektronix whose desk was like that. Eventually his boss got fed up with it and one morning he walked into the desk and pulled everything off of it onto the floor. And then ordered the guy to toss most of it. I think it took him a couple of days to go through it all and figure out what he really needed to save.

4 Producer:  tons of stuff (some of it expensive)  big desk, large area.  Perfect for talking on the phone!

Programmer:  small non-ergonomic desk shoved against the wall of the storeroom.  Not even *room* for personal stuff.  Looks like a kid's desk from Target.

Yep, it's authentic.

6 I had to lay off carbonated drinks because of dehydration headaches and I throw empty plastic bottles into a nearby box for recycling.
