Strange movies

We've all made jokes about Hollywood doing film adaptations of Tetris, or Minesweeper. But this is nearly as bad: in 2011 they're really going to release a film adaptation of the game "Battleship".

You know, I think that the best version of Battleship I ever played was the mini-game of it that was included in "Sam 'n Max Hit the Road". Instead of ships, the targets were things like a car pulling a trailer house. And you played against Max.

There's a new Sam 'n Max game series out now. Reportedly it retains the same kind of wry humorous esthetic. But I can't bring myself to try it, because it uses different voice talent.

The original Max has since done very well. Not too surprising, because he really is good. But maybe he wanted too much money. Or maybe he was too busy. Anyway, I just can't imagine that character with a different voice.

1 Naval warfare is genuinely interesting- I could almost understand this if it were an adaptation of the harpoon series. But Battleship? Positively Onionesque. Coming in 2012.. Tic-Tac-Toe: The Movie.

2 Did you catch the Asteroids movie? It does not appear to be a joke. I think that's Hollywood officially hitting rock bottom; the script will literally be larger than the game putatively being adapted.

3 It makes me sad that crap like this gets made, whereas the Halo movie, which had an actual chance of being a really good action movie, got canned.  And apparently because Hollywood was unwilling to treat the property seriously, too.

I thought they had already achieved critical mass with the Doom movie...

5 No, they achieved critical mass with two movies based on "Mortal Kombat". (The first one was actually kind of fun, but the second really reeked.)

6 Indeed.  The first was cheesy, but not more so than a lot of martial arts flics.  And the fights were generally pretty good.

7 I had a nerdgasm in the first MK when "hidden character" Reptile appeared.  That, and I kept waiting for Raiden to announce "There can be only one!"  Fun cheese indeed.
