Soul Eater -- ep 1

I wanted to see what the Death God's character was like, and I wanted to see zombie Sid, so last night I downloaded Soul Eater, and I just watched the first episode.

It's a lot different than Soul Eater NOT. First, the art is more cartoony. It's got a lot more comedy (though I wonder how long that will last).

Surprisingly, Maka's voice works for me in this, in a way it didn't in SEN. Her voice is fundamentally a comedy voice and this is a comedy part. In SEN she wasn't a comedy part.

There are a lot of nice jokes in it, like the fact that the witch they were chasing was named "Blair". And Soul is a lot more interesting character; in SEN he was a waste of time.

I have no idea how much more of it I'm going to watch, but the first episode was really fun.

UPDATE: Although I think I could get very tired of Maka being teased for being flat-chested.

UPDATE: I'm willing to bet that the Shinigami's voice is the same as the chef at the pirate's nest in Mouretsu Pirates.

UPDATE: Episode 2 was Black Star and Tsubaki. Tsubaki is still the babe, but Black Star is thoroughly annoying. Ep 3 will be The Kid, and he's annoying, too. I think I've had enough.

1 There's never enough Blair in the series.
It starts out pretty much just giving character setups for a while, it's a bit slow going in the start, but the plot does start to unfold.
Blackstar is the most blatant Naruto parody you'll ever run across, and it ends up being brilliant.  And you don't mind him so much after a while because it means you'll get a lot more Tsubaki.
It's actually a lot darker series than it first shows itself, which is actually where the voice casting ends up working out.  But it's not dark in the "grim-dark" variety.  No, this is "we're just bat-s*** nuts!" way.  Maka's voice actually ends up working well for that.  I was... surprised.
Having seen NOT, Stein & Sid's introductions won't have quite the same impact.

2 Particularly Stein's.  Heh.

Actually, Steven, you're either bailing right on time or a few episodes too early.  I haven't figured out if missing out on the appearance of Excalibur is a bonus or not.

3 It's a bonus.

4 Ah, why'd you have to mention Excalibur?  That's easily one of the best episodes.  It's inversion of so many shounen tropes was great.  Plus, well, the voice work was so fun.

Great. Now I have "I'm going to California..." stuck in my head again.

After Gurren Lagann was such a phenomenon, I kind of get the impression that Soul Eater (and Kill la Kill) tried to tap into the same esthetic, albeit with entirely different stories. It's the same kind of animation and the same jokey (almost farcical) story telling style.

I can see why fans of Soul Eater would be put off by Soul Eater NOT because SEN plays it straight, without the strange face faults and the jokey art style. Also, SE doesn't take its own story setting entirely seriously, but SEN plays that straight, too.

7 A number of high-brow arthouse anime used sketchy art on purpose, such as  Windy Tales and Katanagatari.  Kaiba, I think, did something similar, although more in the vein of Astroboy. I'm pretty sure Gurren-Lagann was only a small blip on the radar of their creators.
