Kancolle 12 -- Yay team!

/images/08067.jpg

I downloaded a raw, and I don't know most of the characters, so I didn't fully understand what was going on, but I do know this: what happened in this episode had nothing whatever do with the historical record as I know it. For one thing, battleships never shelled Midway Atoll in my history.

Besides which, the fleet girls used some rather odd tactics the like of which I've never heard of in naval battle.

Kancolle Kick!!! Then she grabs it, throws it up in the air, and blasts it with her guns. Reminds me of Vegita killing Nappa...

Hugs and happiness and a bit of yuri between the two, until one of them notices that they're surrounded. Oddly enough, they don't take any incoming fire.

So they hold one hand each and skate in a circle, spraying torpedoes every which way.

And manage to hit every single one of the threatening ships.

Her bowstring got broken, but someone else was carrying spare bows and threw her one, so she's back in the battle!

Later on, they're down to one bow. That's OK; they'll just fire it together! (Good thing Kaga is ambidextrous.)

I didn't include pictures of it, but Fubuki single-handed destroyed an enemy carrier.

Survivors!

And the final scene? Fubuki walks through a field of flowers (no lilies) and a shadow appears. The Admiral asks her to become his waifu and she says yes.

There was other weird shit going on, like the enemy on the island regenerating damage, and ultimately requiring multiple battleship salvoes to be destroyed.

And unless I miss my count, there were at least 8 girls firing aircraft (which is one too many, historically speaking). The strangest one was a girl who used a crossbow that fired from a box magazine. I assume she was a light carrier.

(UPDATE: I'm wrong. If you assume Shokaku and Zuikaku were there, and the force from Dutch Harbor was there, then 8 is the right number.)

Well, it was a happi endo but major league silliness. Whether fans of the show (and the game) will like it I'm not competent to judge.

But it doesn't measure up to Strike Witches. Not in the same league, even.

1 Even from the viewpoint of a player of the game, this ending was quite a bunch of nonsense.  And it wasn't like the action was good enough to warrant turning off my brain during any of the scenes, although Nagato punching an enemy was both amazing and comical at the same time.

2 I don't remember any punches, but in addition to that flying side kick I remember one roundhouse kick, followed immediately by a gun salvo at point blank range.

Bullhockey.  This ending was outstanding.

4 Fantastic ending.  The writers provided a decent explanation for why everything happens the way it does, including the nonsense.  My one remaining complaint is "The Admiral."

5 Did they explain how the girls learned kung fu?

6 If you mean "where did Nagato the ship girl learn kung fu?" then I guess it's just assumed knowledge like it always is in anime.  If you mean "how can the Battleship Nagato do kung fu?" then the answer is that a battleship can't learn kung fu but a fleet girl can.  Cuz she's human.  Or close enough to count.

1) Rule of Cool.
