Hmm... Upgrades!

And so, Dr. Bowman has upgraded Florence's security settings. I wonder what all changed?

One thing we know for sure: the "off" switch on the remote control no longer works on her. He said he was going to change that. But what else?

I wonder if he severely trimmed back the number of people authorized to give her orders? Or eliminated the list entirely? (Maybe he's the only one now?)

UPDATE: Small fridge moment: while he was working on her, he was close enough so that her transponder should have set off his security collar and zorched him.

But I guess we handwave that: he deactivated her transponder temporarily...

1 I doubt she has a firmware list of people authorized to give orders. It has sounded more like she has a rule set for who can give orders: http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff2600/fv02547.htm

I think he's given her free will. He'd apparently planned for it to happen: http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff2600/fv02536.htm

2 What has bugged me the whole time this story line has gone on is that I find myself not liking the fact that she is thought of as 'just an AI' or 'just a created being.'  Every time someone brings that up in the strip I find myself saying 'but she's a person!'

...

I'm glad Bowman is adjusting things.

3 That's kind of the point: The robots are people, and the humans are only just beginning to realize that. Florence is helping them realize it, because she's a *biological* robot, which makes her harder to dismiss as a non-person.

4 The term that one of the humans used for Florence was "Organic AI".

5 The little lights on the Doc's shock collar were green. In strip 2560 he appears to touch it, and after that the lights are red, which seems to indicate he turned it off.

6 It was Mr. Post who called her an "Organic AI".

7 I think Peterson may be reading Chizumatic... He just addressed the shock collar issue!

8 I would be glad if he were, but I highly doubt that he's a reader.
