Hi10p example

Hatsuyuki announced that they weren't going to use Hi10p encoding, so some other group just showed up with the name "Hi10" which used Hatsuyuki's translation for Maken-ki for a Hi10p encode of the first episode. (My guess is that  the "group" is one guy.)

They're both using TokyoMX's broadcast. Hatsuyuki's file was 452MB and Hi10's was 119MB. They were both 720p.

So is it really worthwhile? I'm not sure. Here's why:

There was a lot of that in the Hi10 version. But whether that's the fault of the codec, or the result of them setting too great of a compression factor, I don't know. (Though I think it more likely to be the latter.)

I do know that a file having that kind of encoding artifact is unacceptable. I'm willing to download and store files which are three times as large in order to avoid that kind of crap.

And "Hi10" needs to be more careful about quality control.

(They also had some kind of brightening going on. In comparable frames, the Hi10 was lighter and looked more washed out.)

UPDATE: Meanwhile, another circle called "Josei-Shini" just took on this show. They're an offshoot of Doki, and they say,

The cool thing about this show? All of the staff members (except our encoder and QC) are women.

So why aren't they working on a shoujo show? Of all the shows to pick, why this one?

Not that I mind, it's just that it seems like a really weird choice for a grrl-circle to work on.

UPDATE: I haven't looked at their version. Frankly, this is not the kind of show where I'll go shopping for good translation.

UPDATE: Curiosity got the better of me. I was curious as to their video source, and they're using TVS, where Hatsuyuki uses Tokyo-MX. But it's still censored.

Hatsuyuki made some sort of noise about eventually using AT-X's uncensored version, but I haven't seen anything like that in the raws. I know that AT-X usually broadcasts later, but is it really this much later? The show broadcast last Tuesday; I thought the delay was usually a couple of days.

Do we really know whether AT-X is showing this one?

UPDATE: Yes, AT-X is showing it, and it ran yesterday (3-day delay). I wonder why we haven't seen a raw yet? (Maybe I just need to be more patient.)

UPDATE: Patience rewarded. It just showed up.

UPDATE: And it's the censored version. The only advantage of the AT-X version is that there's no watermark.

Can't say I'm surprised; removal of the censorship is how they expect to entice people to buy the BDs. If they broadcast the uncensored version on AT-X, BD sales would suffer.

1 This looks like just an idiot encoder, as opposed to any fault with the format itself.

2 I think you're probably right.

3 I didn't do a shot-by-shot comparison, but I didn't see that there was any de-censoring at all in the AT-X version.

4 Indeed, it doesn't seem like the typical "Hi10P playback with a codec that doesn't support it" artifacts. In that case you generally get frames that are half pink/purple, or that have extreme blockiness with colours that are a bit off.

I'm curious though, did you take this screenshot just after seeking to some point in the video? I've seen this kind of blockiness only when you seek and the encode uses an open GOP.

5 I don't remember for sure.

6 Back where I maid the .gif/jpg comment, it wasn't about the "Old days" so much as the pursuit of high compression often results in the destruction of quality, which is overlooked in their enthusiasm.

In these days of ultra-cheap storage, I'd rather go for quality.
