Grumble English grumble

I had an urge today to rewatch Tenchi Muyo GXP. I couldn't find a torrent with a rip, so I had to be old fashioned and dig out my DVD set. I think it's the first time I've watched a DVD in a couple of years.

And it's a pain in the ass. I was using MPC-64, and every time I did almost anything (like "next chapter") it switched back to English audio and no subtitles. Then I'd have to switch back to Japanese and subtitles on. Whenever I started a new DVD it would so the same.

I've run into that sometimes with MKV files created by ripping dual-language DVDs or BDs. The file says, "My default language is English" and even if I was just watching a file in Japanese, the damned program switches back again. I have told MPC that I want Japanese audio, and it ignores me.

I want the damned program would do what I say, not what the file says.

(Here's what I don't want: suggestions for other player programs. Thank you for not offering me unsolicited advice.)

1 I hesitate to speak up, but since it's not a suggestion to change your player... depending on what codec package you are using, many of the mkv splitters can be configured to select the video or subtitle stream of your choice as the default, independent of the player or order in the file.  Essentially, it's overriding what the file offers as the default as you would like.  Some players will ignore this, but it's critical when using, for example media player, that doesn't even give you a good way to choose subtitle choices.

I'm using the Shark007 codec package. (I had problems with CCCP, and this one works really well for me.)

This is one of those issues which is annoying and makes me want to vent, but which isn't really worth trying to fix. I am using V3.20 and I see that they're up to V5.25, but frankly I'm not going to upgrade.

I probably should have put this post under "Rants" instead of "general anime".
