Seikoku no Dragonar -- ep 12

And this is the end of the first series, for surely there will be a sequel. In some ways it was very satisfying and in some ways it was truly disappointing. It felt a bit rushed in some ways, and they left all kinds of things hanging.

UPDATE: I just saw Aroduc's grab bag and noticed several scenes that weren't in the version I watched, because censorship. He watches ATX raws when he can get them, and I'll be looking forward to the FFF sub when it comes out, to see if the things that were deleted might have made this episode make more sense.

At the end of our last episode, Eco had absorbed all kinds of mystical energy from the machine and floated into the sky in the middle of a gigantic glowing egg. At the beginning of this one, it hatches and we get to see her true form.

She is titanically large; she makes all the other dragons look like mosquitos.

Veronica confronts Milgauss and accuses him of being Julius. He decides to give us a bunch of back story and plot exposition:

A long time ago there were two dragon kingdoms, the sacred empire of Avalon and the dark kingdom of Nehalennia. Among other ways in which they differed, they had different ideas about how humans and dragons should interact. So they fought a war, and Avalon won. All modern dragons are descended from Avalon.

Eco is the princess of Avalon. There is also a prince of Nehalennia still around, in spirit form. He possessed Julius's dragon Mordred, and that's why Julius killed that dragon. But it didn't stop the dark spirit, who continued to use the name Mordred. It detached from the dragon and possessed Julius, and has been living through him all this time, using the name Milgauss.

And now that Eco's true form has appeared, Mordred intends to possess it, and return the kingdom of Nehalennia, which intends to treat humans like livestock and to prey on them.

And he does possess her, and the gigantic body transforms. Julius, no longer possessed, borrows Veronica's airship and takes Ash above Eco/Mordred to drop him off. Ash lands on Mordred, but eventually get shaken off and is falling to his death, only to be saved by Lucca and Gawain.

The rest of the student council is there, too, and they work together to give him another chance. Eventually he dumps off of Gawain.

Unfortunately, Mordred shoots a breath attack at him, which by any rights should have vaporized him. However, just in the nick of time, Eco gives him another armor. This one is her creation, not made out of bits and pieces from the library. But it isn't finished (that takes more time than she had). But it's good enough so that the breath attack fails.

It kind of appears, and then fades out to invisibility, but it still protects him and grants him amazing powers. He summons up the weapon, the holy sword Excalibur.

And here is where it all got stupid. Mordred speaks to him, saying that if Ash harms Mordred, Eco will be hurt, too. Ash responds that he knows Eco better than anyone and knows her weaknesses.

And then he slices off one of the horns. And Mordred's dark energy starts pouring out of the body, and the body dissipates, leaving Eco in her little-girl form.

Well, Mordred escaped, and the leader of that nation up North who wants an excuse to restart the war didn't ultimately get one but hasn't given up, and not a lot was resolved. Julius is supposed to be under a death sentence, yet he's walking around free and clear and they didn't bother explaining why.

Avdocha recognized Anya as her sister, but Anya was out cold at the time, and that scene only lasted about ten seconds. And at the very end, Eco told Ash she wanted more than just a Knight-Dragon relationship with him, and they kissed. Sheesh.

It's blatantly obvious that they're hoping to do another series.

There were a lot of good things in this series, but this ending was half-assed.

1 I got it! Ash and Eco will eventually marry and have a daughter, who will get her own show!

2 The child would have demanded more than two episodes, to be sure.

Another episode to build drama would have been nice. .

Wittenhause (sp?) could not have been for the subjugating of humans for food, but just what were he and Milgaus supposedly working together for? The destruction of Ansarivan?
