Gokukoku no Brynhildr -- ep 1

I remember when this show was first broadcast and I saw the description of it, mainly being "one high school boy and several cute girls in an astronomy club", so I figured it was the latest in a long line of harem shows.

Well, it's long since finished being released on BD, so I just downloaded a rip in hopes that it might provide top-rotation fodder.. And I was really wrong about it. The OP is strange as all get out; there are four girls and each of them is initially shown covered with blood. The first episode was really spooky, and I'm hooked.

I don't think this is going to be a "dead girls" show, and I don't think it's horror. And if it's magical girlfriend then the emphasis isn't on romance.

The only thing that sits wrong is that two of the girls are talking to each other by radio and start their conversation by saying "CQ CQ". That's not what CQ means, to a ham. (CQ means "I want to talk to someone new. Anyone hearing this, please respond.") But it's a minor point and I'll overlook it.

UPDATE: After ep 2, I have to correct myself. This may well be a horror series. I'm not generally a big one for such things but I may make an exception in this case, at least for another episode or two.

1 2X2L calling CQ... 2X2L calling CQ... isn't there anybody on the air?  Isn't there anybody on the air?

Isn't there... anyone?

2 I've heard it described as a "Comedy dressed in a tragedy".
I went back and checked some reviews, pretty much it's the write from Elfen Lied's attempt at a comedy.  Expect some really jarring tone shifts.  But the girls are pretty cute.

3 Took Dad to see the Missouri recently. We went looking for the radio room, but it's not on the tour. Turns out that is because it's home to a ham club that will let visitors operate the station there, but unfortunately we didn't find that out until afterward.

I've got a license but it's collected dust for years. Apartment living means no fixed station worth the bother, and no commute means it's not really worth rigging my two-meter station in my car these days. And I don't really feel the lack, to be honest - these days talking to someone in a foreign country just isn't that unusual.

Lots of nostalgia involved, though - Dad had me working on electronics before I could tie my shoes. "Here, son, pull the capacitors off this board... no, wait!... now don't you wish you'd picked the soldering iron up by the handle?" This from a man who has no problem fiddling with a screwdriver in the guts of a live kilowatt amplifier...

4 Mauser called Gokukoku no Brynhildr "Darker than Elfen Lied".

I got caught in a "just one more episode" loop and finished watching it about 4:30 AM.

DEAD GIRLS!!! Lots and lots of dead girls... And yeah, I'd classify it as science fiction horror.

I haven't seen Elfen Lied so I can't compare them. What it reminds me of is Divergence Eve, except that GnB isn't as good. (The stories are not comparable, but it has something of the same feel for much of the duration.)

I'm going to write a post about it later, after I eat my breakfast.
