Fairy Tail -- ch 435, 436

So the battle ends with victory for the good guys in chapter 435. And lots of old friends are reunited.

Chapter 436 was the interesting one: it was about Zeref, and finally told some of his back story. Big spoilers below the fold.

Zeref had a younger brother who died very young, and as a result Zeref was obsessed with life and death, and in particular obsessed about whether it might be possible for him to bring the dead back to life. His teachers kept forbidding him to research that area, but he ignored them. And as a result he was cursed by Ancselem, the god of life and death. The more he treasures life, the more death he creates, and in the midst of it all he himself is immortal.

Since then he has tried to find a way to die. One of his attempts was to see if he could create demons powerful enough to kill him, and that's where the "demons of the Book of Zeref" came from. Unfortunately, they couldn't do it.

His last, best, hope is END, Etherias Natsu Dragneel -- and that's the big reveal.

Yes, that is our Natsu. He ended up with Igneel somehow (we're promised to hear about that "some other day") and the involvement of Mavis in all this is also for another day.

At the end of this chapter Zeref visits Acnologia (in human form) and they talk, not kindly. It looks like we're setting up for a three-way battle between Zeref, Acnologia, and the good guys.

I have a wild-assed guess how it's going to end: Natsu will defeat Acnologia and Zeref either ends up dead or ends up uncursed by Mavis. (Another wild-assed guess: Mavis Dragneel, Zeref's older sister?) But Natsu will have become a monster, even stronger than Acnologia was. The good guys will all try to fight him and will lose, and Lucy will find the One Magic (the power of love) and save him with it. And in the end they'll go into a clench.

A poetic way for Lucy to find the One Magic would be for Lyra to come through spontaneously and sing the song that made Lucy cry in anime episode 153. But Igneel might speak to her, and the Spirit King might speak to her, and the rest of her summons might communicate to her too.

That doesn't necessarily end the series, but it closes down all the plotlines the mangaka has been dangling all through the run. It could end with this story line. (But not if the magazine has any say in it.)
