Absolute Duo -- ep 4

Introducing the fourth haremette, Lilith (and her servant Sarah).

/images/07915.jpg

She's a transfer student from the sister campus in England. She heard stories about Thor, being an "irregular", and decided she wanted him as her Duo. So she marches into the classroom, hauls him out of it, and tells him he's going to break up his Duo and join her instead.

He tries to be polite but at a certain point he's had enough. He tells her "no" and walks out on her, much to her surprise. She's obviously spoiled rotten and is used to getting her way.

They say that "beauty is skin deep but ugly goes right to the bone." Right now that's my guess for a description of this character. Whether she's nobility or simply filthy rich isn't yet clear, but she hasn't given up on him, and thus hilarious harem hijinks are born. It says here.

Lessee. Oh, yeah: the psycho teacher is back. The head master was impressed by the fact that Thor and Julie defeated Tsukimi, and credit her with being a good teacher. And never mind that she was trying to kill them all; that apparently doesn't matter.

Um, Thor takes Julie clothes shopping. Tomoe and Miyabi think they're going on a date and follow them. Four thugs try to hit on them. It's obvious that Tomoe could handle them all, but Thor and Julie hear it and join them, and then Lilith uses her blaze to knock them all out. Turns out her blaze is a rifle -- and that's why she's an "exception".

And then we get blatant fan service at the end with Tomoe and Miyabi taking Julie shopping for bras. Ye Gods.

If you're getting the idea that I didn't like this episode, you're very perceptive.

1 Thor did a good job staying cool with and standing up to Lilith, but he was all too easily flustered with Julie. That's a trope that tires me.

And Julie is such a tender flower that she

What was stupid about Lilith's interference is that it took a good 15 seconds between her first shot and her last one, and after she dropped the first goon none of the others looked around and said, "Hey, we're being shot at! Maybe we should take cover." No, they just stood there and waited for their turn.

There were a lotof things wrong with this episode.

4 Tenka Seiha calls it "tedious".

"...There was a bloody fashion montage followed by a date montage. If I actually had the slightest belief that their relationship would actually go anywhere, but of course it won’t. The least they could do would be to have him simply accept her attempts to make him fondle her, bathe with him, and sleep with him without resorting to screaming and another few minutes of padded out apologies."

Did anybody out there enjoy this ep?

It was a lousy episode, but I wouldn't put too much reliance on Aroduc's evaluation. These days he hates everything.

I don't know why he keeps doing it when it's clear he doesn't enjoy it any longer. (Or maybe he enjoys snarking.)

6 Sheer inertia, I think. He did finally stop coming to the #animeblogger though.

Yo.  Oh, don't get me wrong, it wasn't particularly good, but that's no skin off my bill... I don't mind bad anime.  I like Julie, having been a flustered, well-mannered teenager, I can understand why Thor is acting the way he is (even though it's too over-the-top), and I even got where Lilith is coming from... and liked the way Thor shut her down.

It's not a harem anime; that would imply there's some question as to whom Thor would end up with.  I see it as a (bad) rom-com with fighting.  And drek.  It's drek.  But it's easy-to-watch drek.

And they tossed in a "buy the BD's" shot, at the very beginning of episode 4. I think there might have been another earlier (Julie in the shower).

Those are fine with me, of course. Except that if you're going to do them, do them right and do them more often. Two brief ones in four episodes is rather stingy.

Though now that Lilith is obviously trying to seduce Thor (for all intents and purposes) I imagine there will be more of them.

The one thing I'll give them credit for is not making Julie a tsundere. Thank goodness for small favors.

9 "The one thing I'll give them credit for is not making Julie a tsundere."

This is basically the reason I'm watching. Julie honestly depends on Thor for comfort and support in a world she seems rather ill-equipped to deal with. That's why I want him to keep his cool with her; his frantic apologies do not inspire confidence.

I like male leads who lead.

Actually, what I disliked most about this episode was the return of the psycho teacher. I find her seriously annoying, with that constant voice change, and generally everything else about her.

She isn't even a fan service asset.
