Dog Days'' -- ep 4

So the crisis is over and it's time for a comedy fan service episode. Tentacles, yo!

Need I make clear that it's NSFW below the fold? I guess I just did.

We'll start with Nanami giving Leo a hot oil massage.

Nanami brought a selection of scented oils from London.

/images/07923.jpg

And then they bathe together along with a... rubber duck? Nanami mentions that she wanted to thank Adelaide for the spirit stone, and Leo says that the Genoise are going to Pastillage that day on an errand and that Nanami should go with them.

So anyway, what with one thing and another (skipping some plot exposition) a minor demon called a "munimuni" escapes from where Valerio has been growing it secretly. It's not very harmful; it attacks people and dissolves clothing and metal. (Though, as we'll see, not ALL clothing nor ALL metal.)

There's a fashion show being held in the main hall of the palace, and some of them show up there. Others go to the Guard Knights quarters, where they don't fare well:

But against the models at the fashion show (who are not fighters) they do much better.

/images/07925.jpg

And they start reproducing exponentially. Jaune and Vert go into action, and do OK for a while:

But eventually they're overwhelmed.

/images/07930.jpg

/images/07931.jpg

It seems that shoes aren't digestible.

Surrounded!

For the moment the demons are confined to the palace but if they escape into the town there'll be hell to pay. Adelaide has an idea but needs Becky and Nanami's help. If the owners of a hero crystal, a demon crystal, and a spirit crystal all work together they can cleanse the whole area.

Adelaide's crown also seems not to be digestible. Becky and Nanami both transform:

/images/07935.jpg

(Where did those clothes come from? We don't ask questions like that.) And then they create a seal around the palace and its grounds, preventing any of the demons from escaping.

/images/07938.jpg

Adelaide gets Couverte up on the roof and they make her do a Hero-stone transformation. Somehow, even though there isn't any stone involved.

/images/07939.jpg

/images/07940.jpg

She fires a big blast at the top of the barrier, and it finishes off all the demons and cleanses the grounds.

/images/07941.jpg

/images/07942.jpg

And it turns out that all of this converts the demon into a spirit, in Becky's hands.

Which, of course, was the real point of this episode. Shinku wasn't here for this one, but eventually the three heroes will do the same thing.

1 I think Adelaide's tiara/crown is actually another copy of the Hero Crystal.  At least, that's what I assumed since they introduced them in season 2.  Given her eyes are in the constant Star State (while only Becky's eyes do that with the Demon Crystal), I assume the Crystal is always active.
Still, the instant it was the "sanbaka" group going with Nanami, you knew the clothes were getting lost, somehow.
And I have to give the Dog Days' creative staff a lot of credit with Valeria.  He's always made a very credible "Demon King" with his powers and thinking.  He's just not, well, evil.  A lecher, but not overly evil.  And, frankly, gooes that eat up weapons & armor would make a great defensive measure.
As for the exposition, apparently in the season 2 BluRay discs, there was a small manga with some backstory.  Valerie was the son of the King/younger brother of the princess that summoned Adelaide.  (Note, and confirmed this episode, she is French.)  So the "Maou" phase might have just been that, a phase.  And it's also likely that entire backstory is the next story arc.  The series doesn't drop character insights without paying them off.

The hero stones don't do that to people's eyes. Neither does the spirit stone. We never see that with Shinku, Gaul, or Nanami. Only Becky.

I've long though that the stone in her tiara is a demon stone and yes, I think it's permanently on. And that's why her eyes always look like that. However, this episode suggests that it's possible for one person to have more than one stone and use them all simultaneously. That's why she had two hero stones to give to Shinku and Gaul; they were both hers. (But not totally so, since her crest wasn't inscribed in them.)

Valerio made mention of his sister in this episode, and I was wondering about her.

Another thing is that Adelaide's exposition this time said that the princess, Adel, and Valerio, working together sealed the demon that threatened the kingdom. Which was a surprise; the original impression was that he was the original villain that Adel fought against.

(one other note: his name can't be "Valeria" because that's a feminine ending, thus a girl's name. Of course, the director may not care about things like that, so maybe I'm wrong.)

I actually own the Japanese BD's for both series, so I just got the second-series BD's out and took a look. Valerio is introduced in episode 6, which is on BD 3, and that one had the two-page manga to which you refer. Of course, I can't read it, but here they are: page_1page_2 Anyone who's fluent care to help us out here?

That's the best I could do with my phone camera, and I didn't resize them because I didn't want to lose any detail on the writing, so they're huge. (About 3 MB each, and lots of pixels.)

5 Pure speculation:
The unnamed "older sister"/Princess will turn out to be Couverte's direct ancestor. Which makes Valerio her great-great-X uncle.  Considering I think she just transformed into her Hero Mode in ep 4.  It's an open question if the Princess or the King died in the battle against the Demons.
At the same time, there might be a little bit of Retcon'ing happening, which isn't impossible.
The things I can read in the 2nd page is the Couverte finds it very interesting and that the party was 5 people, though since we know Yukikaze showed up later, it implies that the Princess was part of the original Demon Hunting party.
Though there's an important thing going on: at 10:55 in ep 4, Adele calls it "Oukoku" of Pastillage.  In season 2 and 3, it's a Principality.  She also says "Older Sister of Valerio" was the last ruler.  (Though she calls her "Hime-sama", so it's not King/Queen)
If I'm taking a guess, Hime-sama died in the big battle, Adele became "King", and the Kingdom became a Principality for the descendants. Then again, Biscotti is a Republic with a Princess, so maybe we're looking at this wrong, haha.  Anyway, it should be interesting to get some backstory.
