So it's a battle. Athena finds Mariya with the medallion. Mariya tries to protect it, but she's massively outclassed. Athena captures it and undergoes a power-up transformation. Frankly, she doesn't really look all that different from her loli form; I was expecting something a lot more spectacular.
But it turns out that one of Godou's abilities is to be summoned. Mariya visualizes him and wants him to appear, and there he is.
He fights Athena, and defeats her rather easily in fact. It was an amazing battle, visually and in other ways, but it was a bit underwhelming that he didn't really have to struggle. I'm sure it won't stay that way.
He doesn't kill her in the end, which is as I expected. Athena figures stongly in the ED animation; it wouldn't make sense for her to be featured so prominently if she were going to be taken out in the fourth episode.
Of course, it's part of canon that Godou has all of Verethragna's powers, and Verethragna spent thousands of years fighting every other god in sight and won every time. So perhaps it wasn't really all that surprising after all.
Will Athena show up again? Without question. Will she be friend or foe? Well, yes. And that's why it's going to be interesting.
The show had Godou spouting a lot of exposition about Athena's history, but it wasn't "as you know, Jim". It was part of his power while using the golden sword; by describing those things, he cut Athena off from them. She has lost her past, and a lot of her capabilities; at least that's the way I interpret it. She isn't powerless, though, and she is ancient and knowledgeable. My guess is that she's going to turn into an example of "The Only One Allowed to Defeat You". And eventually she'll be part of the harem.
It's in the rules; every harem has to have a loli that's older than she looks.

I'm actually really liking the series a whole lot, after it's slowed down a little. So much just happened in that first episode that they just needed a bit more time to flesh things out. Now that we know how this world operates, at least a bit, it's pretty fun.
It also helps that both Erica & Godou are pretty cool. Godou has a roll to play as "harem lead", but he still seems a pretty interesting character. I just hope we get time to see more into him. Erica, of course, is the really interesting one in all of this. She's actually not a Tsundere, though at first glance you'd expect her to be. She's actually actively approving of harem members. Which is both hilarious and a realistic understanding of the position Godou is eventually going to hold. As he might be age-immortal (at least, that's the hint from some of the comments), he's going to attract a collection of people. Erica definitely took the "strike early" approach to securing a position. Haha

Eventually Verathragna is going to show up and want his powers back. That should be interesting, but it might not happen during this 1-cour series.

Granted, I highly doubt it's going to take long for loli-Athena to show back up, haha.
